NEWS

Eastbourne Seafront Wednesday Health Walk Now Runs Weekly

Back in March, The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), which runs the East Sussex Health Walks project, launched a new Health Walk along Eastbourne Seafront. Working in partnership with the Sovereign Centre, this walk was initially planned to run only twice a month but due to its ongoing success it will now run every week throughout the year. Health Walks are free, one hour walks providing a convenient and regular way to get active, meet new people and explore the local area. By keeping the walks short, new walkers and those with long term health conditions can feel more confident getting started. The walks will be meeting every Wednesday at 10:30 am outside the Sovereign Centre. Please ensure you are wearing appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather conditions on the day. For more information about the East Sussex Health Walks, please contact Jenny Deering on 07740 899 559 or email j.deering@tcv.org.uk

Lewes WEA Branch: 2017-2018 Programme

The leaflet for the 2017-8 programme run by the WEA - the nation’s largest provider of adult education - is now available from the Lewes, Seaford and Eastbourne tourist information centres. Courses this year include ones on the concerto, the philosophy of public policy, the cult of Saints and the Sussex coast.  As usual, there is a strong art history programme, including impressionism, Titian, the art of the British Empire and the Russian revolution. International politics are also featured, looking at America - before and after Trump - and the world situation in general. Fees have remained the same, although if you are on an income-related benefit, such as pension credit, then classes are free. Full details are available on www.southern.wea.org.uk or visit the WEA stand at the Societies’ Fair, at Lewes Town Hall on Saturday, 2 September, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Eastbourne Volunteers Project Signs Licence for New Premises

The Eastbourne Volunteers project has signed a licence last week for some new premises in The Labyrinth, Mark Lane, right in the heart of Eastbourne town centre. The new unit, next to the project’s Community Information Hub, is going to be opened as a safe space for young people aged 16-25 who may be care leavers, homeless or have other issues that means they need practical help and support. The new space will be called ‘The Junction: a place where things come together’, and Eastbourne Volunteers would like to hear from any organisations working with young people in Eastbourne that would like to help shape the project or work from the space. The unit has a kitchen and the project hopes to create a young person-friendly environment with cooking facilities, a washing machine, information and signposting to other services. The project also has the use of a small office it hopes to offer counselling from. Eastbourne Volunteers is keen to have representatives from any relevant local organisations involved with The Junction from the start in order to provide a fully comprehensive service to young people. If you would like to work with Eastbourne Volunteers on this project or be kept updated as to progress, please email info@eastbournejunction.co.uk

Balloon Festival Opening Act

The Balloon festival took place in Hampden Park on 29-30 July 2017 and, even though the weather did not behave, it proved to be a very popular event and the arena was buzzing from early Saturday morning. Chances4Change Eastbourne is currently supporting a local group in East Hampden Park called ‘Friends of Tugwell Park’ and in 2016, from this group grew a small community choir: ‘The Tugwell Community Family Choir.’ After only 4 rehearsals prior to the festival weekend, local girls from the Tugwell Park area along with members of the ‘Friends of’ group performed onstage as the opening act at the Balloon Festival. The choir members had a photo opportunity with MP Stephen Lloyd and the High Sheriff who opened the whole Balloon Festival. As excitement escalated, the choir was introduced on stage by Sandy Boyce-Sharpe from the ‘Friends of Hampden Park’. The singers and dancers did really well at the performance, the local girls performed with a couple of star performers Hayley Mullins - professional singer/songwriter and Jack Buster Weston singer/songwriter. Well done to the two volunteers June and Lynn who lead the local choir (and ran the whole community stage for the day!).
