Member of the Week: Self Managed Learning College

Each issue, we highlight the work of one 3VA member in what is an amazingly diverse membership of over 570 groups and organisations working across Wealden, Eastbourne and Lewes District. This week it is the turn of Self Managed Learning College


Self Managed Learning College has been providing self-managed learning programmes for young people in Brighton for 15 years. The college is a vibrant learning community that offers a real alternative to schooling, providing a stimulating and nurturing environment where students can develop the confidence and skills they need for the future. Whatever they want to learn a way is found for them to do so. Self Managed Learning College students feel well prepared to take the next steps in their careers when they leave the college. Results for students of all abilities have been exceptional, with all 16 year olds going on to further education or employment. You can find out more about this unique learning community for 9-16 year olds in the heart of Brighton by attending the open day tomorrow, Tuesday 7 March, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on the 1st floor of Brighton Youth Centre, 64 Edward Street, Brighton BN2 0JR.



Access to Services in Rural Wealden – Recap from Recent Meeting

On 16 February 2017, transport and access champions met to discuss how to help people get around Wealden - in the absence of scheduled services - to take advantage of leisure, job and volunteering opportunities and gain access to essential services such as medical appointments. The Prince's Trust Team Programme

The Prince’s Trust Team Programme is preparing for its final programme of this academic year, providing a perfect opportunity for those preparing to enter further education or looking for employment in September 2017. The course will be running from 2 May to 21 July. The Team programme is a 12-week programme of personal development for 16 to 25 year olds, helping them to develop their confidence, employability skills and teamwork skills through projects in the community and sessions at the base room in Sussex Downs College. The programme is aimed at young people who are not in education, employment or training and through participation of the course every member of the Team aims to progress into apprenticeship, employment or another form of education or training. Through completing the course, participants gain not only valuable communication skills, interview techniques, uncover hidden talents, but also gain a nationally recognised qualification and take part in an individual 2-week work placement.


3VA Spaces for Hire

Are you looking for a venue to hire for a one off or regular event? Available at very competitive rates, 3VA’s Annexe is a versatile space with a kitchen that can accommodate many different uses. There is enough space for up to 30 people (depending on the layout of the room). We are in the heart of Eastbourne and only a short walk from the train station. Co-ordinating Voluntary Transport Schemes

16 March, Uckfield
Do you provide a volunteer transport solution such as a community bus, volunteer drivers scheme in East Sussex? Are you a volunteer driver or do you use these services? 3VA invites you to Co-ordinating Voluntary Transport Schemes at Uckfield Civic Centre on Thursday, 16 March from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm to identify good practice in operating this service, recruiting and retaining volunteers and to consider options for building a comprehensive and sustainable network.

East Sussex Hearing Resource Centre is a registered charity working in partnership with Adult Social Care to provide a no charge mobile information and advice service for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people living in East Sussex. The vehicle, funded by Big Lottery and equipped to offer demonstrations of assistive equipment and hearing screening tests (if time permits), will be visiting Rotherfield and Ticehurst in our area during the month of March.


A Call for Young People to Help Shape Wealden District's Future Plans

23 March, Uckfield
Wealden Strategic Partnership invites Wealden's young people (11 years +) to take part in an event that seeks to answer the following question: How can young people inform and play an active role in shaping the future of Wealden and its communities? This free, informal event will take place from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, 23 March 2017 at Pilgrim Hall, Lewes Road, Easons Green, Uckfield, TN22 5RE. It will take the form of Open Space – a process that allows everyone in the room to play an active part in answering an Open Space question, of strategic importance, which they have been asked to help answer. The participants create the agenda, work together with no hierarchy and agree on recommendations and solutions at the event. Please encourage your young people to take this opportunity to have their voices heard by local decision-makers and make a difference in their community! East Sussex Volunteer Coordinators’ Networking Forum & Lewes District Networking Forum

29 March, Newhaven
The East Sussex Volunteer Coordinators Networking Forum will take place from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm, followed by a free lunch, and the Lewes District Networking Forum for voluntary and community groups from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm. Both events will be at the Hillcrest Centre in Newhaven.



Volunteer Driver Schemes Survey

Deadline for responses: 10 March 2017
If you organise volunteer driver schemes in East Sussex, 3VA would like to hear from you. We are mapping Volunteer Driver Schemes in East Sussex, capturing the experience of organisations, drivers and passengers. The aim is to establish what currently exists, identify best practice and build capacity and resilience. We have launched 3 online surveys:

  • Survey 1 is for organisations that provide a volunteer driver scheme.
  • Survey 2 is for volunteer drivers.
  • Survey 3 is for those people who use volunteer driver schemes as a passenger.

The plan is to share the results in a forum to discuss Voluntary Transport Solutions and plan next steps. Please share these links with your contacts and encourage as many volunteer drivers and passengers to complete.


Older People's Housing Needs Survey

Deadline for responses: 19 March 2017
If you live in East Sussex and are starting to think about where you want to live as you get older, East Sussex County Council want to hear from you (home owners and renters as well as people living in all types of properties) through the Older People’s Housing Needs Survey. If you’ve already moved, they would also like to hear about your reasons for moving. This is your chance to influence:

  • supported housing services for older people;
  • the sort of accommodation on offer to older people;
  • the amount of accommodation that is built; and
  • where it is built.

Although this questionnaire is aimed at people aged 55 and over, views about older people’s housing is welcome from East Sussex residents of any age. Hilden Charitable Fund - Summer Play Schemes 

Deadline for applications: 24 May 2017
Hilden Charitable Fund grants of between £500 and £1,500 are available to help community groups run summer play schemes lasting for two to six weeks for the benefit of disadvantaged children aged five to 18 years. Play schemes should be local schemes lasting for two to six weeks with strong volunteer support. Some priority will be given to projects that show they are inclusive of children from refugee families and show BME involvement. 


The Homity Trust

Deadline for applications: 31 May 2017
The Homity Trust is a Brighton based charity that gives modest awards to local causes suffering financial hardship where a small grant can make a significant difference. East Sussex is covered.



Basic First Aid for Adults

14 March, Eastbourne
This 3-hour Basic First Aid for Adults course is for people who want a general knowledge of first aid principles and to learn skills for the emergency treatment of injuries or sudden illness. Skills include: Basic Life Support and CPR, and what to do for choking, external bleeding, shock, minor injuries and burns.


Demystifying Social Capital

21 March, Lewes
The Demystifying Social Capital course will look at what is meant by the terms ‘social capital’ and ‘social impact’. It will look at how to identify social capital and social impact in your own organisation’s work and how to use this information to develop your work streams, partnerships and funding applications. This course is aimed at community and voluntary organisation staff and / or volunteers who would like to improve their understanding of social capital and social impact and how it can be used for project and organisational development. It will be particularly useful to those who are new to the concepts, for those who are planning new areas of work and writing funding applications.

Freelance Experts - Railway Land Wildlife Trust

Deadline for applications: 15 March 2017
The Railway Land Wildlife Trust has been successful in securing a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund's Resilient Heritage programme. The grant will be used to increase the long-term sustainability of the Trust by improving governance, diversifying and increasing income and consolidating its volunteer support. We are therefore recruiting freelance experts in three areas, namely business development, marketing and the third sector. To apply, please submit a CV demonstrating experience of delivering similar projects and including two recent references (maximum two pages) and a succinct summary of how you would approach this work (maximum two pages) to coordinator@railwaylandproject.org.
